5. Pyloric carcinoma

Page created on February 7, 2019. Last updated on May 19, 2019 at 17:45

Organ: Pylorus, duodenum

Description:

The pylorus is whitish, fibrotic and diffusely thickened.

Diagnosis: Carcinoma pylori

Risk factors:

  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Epstein Barr virus
  • Intestinal metaplasia

Theory:

The pathogenesis is similar to that of linitis plastica, the only difference here being that only the pylorus is affected and not the whole stomach. This morphology is also due to desmoplastic neostroma after a diffuse-type pyloric cancer.

Pyloric cancer has the possibility to cause pyloric stenosis.

  1. hi,
according to dr.bela diffusely infiltrating carcinoma(pyloric carcinoma) is not associated to helicobacter pylori infection.

    1. I see. I looked online and in Robbins but can’t find any evidence that diffuse carcinoma is not associated with H. pylori infection. Our teacher didn’t mention that either.

Did he explain any further? Did he emphasize that H. pylori doesn’t increase risk for diffuse carcinoma specifically or did he just not mention it as a cause?

          1. I have the direct quote from Bela here: “Diffuse type adenocarcinoma is not associated with H. pylori infection”
