23. Differential diagnosis of enuresis.

Introduction

Enuresis is the urinary incontinence in a child which at an age where children generally are continent (over 3 – 5 years). Enuresis is primary if the child was never urinary continent, and secondary if they lose previously achieved continence. Nocturnal enuresis is more common than diurnal. In most cases of enuresis, an underlying cause is not found.

Etiology

Most common causes:

  • Idiopathic – no organic cause, may have developmental or behavioural problem, family history
  • Bladder dysfunction
  • Neuropathic bladder
  • Emotional upset
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Polyuria (DM, diabetes insipidus)
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Constipation
