Abbreviation | Name | Function |
TAG | Triacylglycerol | A glycerol with three fatty acids. Released from lipid droplets when perilipin is phosphorylated. |
DAG | Diacylglycerol | A glycerol with two fatty acids |
MAG | Monoacylglycerol | A glycerol with just one fatty acid |
ATGL | Adipocyte triacylglycerol lipase | Catalyses TAG -> DAG + FFA |
HSL | Hormone sensitive lipase | Catalyses DAG -> MAG + FFA
Activated by PKA |
MGL | Monoacylglycerol | Catalyses MAG -> Glycerol + FFA |
Perilipin | A protein that usually covers lipid droplets to prevent them from being broken down. After being phosphorylated by PKA they no longer protect the lipid droplets so that lipases can break them down. |
