12. Kimmelstiel Wilson syndrome

Page created on February 20, 2019. Last updated on December 18, 2024 at 16:56

Staining: PAS-H

Organ: Kidney

Description:

Even with low magnification are PAS-positive glomeruli visible. With higher magnification are PAS-positive nodules inside the glomeruli visible.

Diagnosis: Nodular glomerulosclerosis

Causes:

  • Diabetes

Theory:

Nodular glomerulosclerosis is the third and last stage of diabetic nephropathy. It occurs as a result of glucose combining with proteins in the glomerular vessel wall to form AGE products. AGEs stimulate the mesangial cells to produce more mesangial matrix, which is what forms the PAS positive nodules. The nodules are called Kiemmelstiel-Wilson nodules or lesions.
