Definition and epidemiology

Etiology Typical features
Viral gastroenteritis Vomiting, no fever, generally mild
Bacterial gastroenteritis Vomiting, dysentery (bloody diarrhoea with fever), more severe than viral
Food poisoning During travel or after eating out, others who ate the same have symptoms
Antibiotic associated Recent antibiotic treatment
Systemic infection (otitis, pneumonia, etc.) Depends on the infection
